The one truly fantastic plan that Thomas Jefferson created for this fledgling nation is rarely if ever discussed. His remarkable ability to see into the future, and to tactfully instruct his contemporaries, on either side of the political coin, as to the best means to avert political disaster, is perhaps his finest gift to We the People, long after the fact of his actual existence. Thomas Jefferson was, in fact, the actual architect of our independence. Like most English colonials of the period, Thomas Jefferson had originally been a devout, and indeed, a most diligently practicing Englishman. His loyalty was the same as many of the other colonials of that period; he was true to King and Country. He was schooled at William and Mary. He also served as a burgess from Albemarle County in his local Virginia government under a royal governor from 1769 to 1775, and he actually mourned in writing the loss of the protection of the king in his declaration for colonial independence. He had actually purchased the Natural Bridge from King George III for the princely sum of five shillings. He was about as English as they came, in fact. It was, however, this very fact of English colonial degradation which began to play upon his young mind, and upon the minds of those with whom he would have to do. It had actually been in the Northern colonies that this particular want was the most keenly felt, and Jefferson, as an excellent example of a true Virginian, had been summoned by the Northerners in New England to thus involve Virginia and the rest of the four massive southern colonies in this new stake for equal rights in their dealings with Mother England; namely, free trade with other countries and the ability to manufacture their own goods, both of which were forbidden under the colonial mercantilist arrangement. But it had been NEW ENGLAND who had wanted to "put us all one more back into the colonial condition" with the ideas of the federal being over the states, and not as a side by side agent with the states, in congress assembled. And this is what persuaded Jefferson to write nearly 20,000 letters in defense of his original Declaration of Independence from all such tyranny, and to defend his Spirit of '76, his Principles of '98, and his own Revolution of 1800, when the Northern Left were defeated for the very first time. This book hopes to explain Thomas Jefferson, the agrarian Libertarian of his day; the full-blown states rights advocate that even many of his modern living historian portrayers wish to ignore completely.
